Also known as the alligator pear
Is a medium sized evergreen tree
The rich pulp of the fruit is high in fat
They are a substitute for butter
They have high levels of Vitamin E
They can grow to 14 meters tall
They can be pruned to 2.5 meters tall
They have a shallow root system
The fruit can be green, purple or dark green
Main varieties are Hass, Wurtz and Fuerte
Yield can be as high as 50kg per tree















How to Grow

Plant trees late winter or late summer
They like slightly acid soil
They like free draining soil
They need a very deep soil
Add compost before planting
Keep the soil moist
Mulch to a depth of 10cm around the tree

Harvesting

Avocados will produce fruit in 3-4 years
Different varieties fruit at different times
Fruit will ripen after it is picked
