Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus)

Also known as gumbo it is the exotic taste of summer
Okra is available in two colors, green and red. Red okra carries the same flavor as the more popular green okra and differs only in color. When cooked, the red okra pods turn green.
The green pods are refreshing
The bushes grow to about a meter tall
The seeds are very hard
Raw okra is 90% water, 2% protein, 7% carbohydrates and negligible in fat
It is rich in Vitamin C and Vitamin K
a minimum of 6 plants is good for an average family
They yield about one kilogram per 3 meters













How to grow
Sow seeds from mid-Spring to early Summer
Sow seeds 1 inch(2.5cm) deep one per 40cm in rows 50cm apart
Raise and treat as for tomatoes or capsicums
They may need staking

Harvesting
The long green pods are picked when young

Clemson's Spineless - dark green pods
Penta Green - an early variety
Redskin - red pods
