Also known as smallage
It is a leafy, herbaceous perennial
It can grow to over 2m(7ft) tall
Leaves and shoots are yeast or celery flavoured
In ancient Greece it was used as a medicine
All parts of the plant can be used in cooking
Leaves are used for salads, soups and stews
Leaves are used for meats, sauces and with vegetables
Seeds are used on meats or breads
The roots are used for tea
The roots are edible
It has small yellow flowers
Germination from seed is erratic
The plant dies down in winter

How to Grow

Grow in sun or partial shade
It likes rich, deep and moist soil
Sow seed in Autumn
Space seedlings 3 feet apart
Water the plant frequently

















Harvesting

Pick leaves before flowering
Use leaves fresh or dried
Dig roots at anytime, use fresh
Collect seeds when they turn brown
