Walnuts are very handsome looking trees
They are related to pecans
They are suited to very large gardens
They reach 10m tall in 20 years of growth
They can grow to 18 meters tall
Yields are erratic
Yield can be as high as 100kg per tree
They go well in cakes
Or can be eaten by themselves
The trees have valuable timber
Trees secrete chemicals into the ground
That may inhibit growth of nearby plants
How to Grow
Plant in late Autumn or Winter
In a place well away from other plants
Choose grafted plants
They like a deep fertile soil
Dig a hole big enough for the taproot
Use a short stake to support the young tree
Mulch plants
Walnuts are wind pollinated
Keep birds away if possible
Harvesting
Autumn
Gather nuts when the hulls crack
Dry the nuts in the sun
