Are fruiting perennials
Are easy to grow
Fresh strawberries are a gardening joy
They are grown from the tropics to cold climates
They produce side growths of new plants called runners
They can be grown in pots or raised beds
They can be planted in barrels or tubs
Ideally one plant can produce 500g of fruits
They can be grown from seeds
It is best to grow from runners or transplants

How to Grow

They like a sunny position
Prepare the soil with compost and fertiliser
Plant runners in late Autumn or early Spring
Space plants 30cm(12in) apart
Place the crown level with the ground
Use a liquid fertiliser when flowering begins
Straw or black plastic keeps the soil moist
And prevents weeds and keeps fruit clean
Prevent snails and slugs from getting fruits
With woodash or snail bait

















Harvesting

Usually in Summer
They ripen quickly in hot weather
For best flavor pick when they are fully colored
Pick fruits before birds eat them
Cover plants with netting or fine mesh
